Ah, the musical. In the heyday of Hollywood, nothing was more popular than musicals. Since the first talkie, The Jazz Singer, revolutionized cinema when it came out in 1927, musicals became the show of shows. Huge production numbers, intricate choreography, memorable songs, these were the trademarks of the Hollywood musicals in the '30s '40s and '50s. Dancers became stars, and none more so than such luminaries as Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Gene Kelly.

At the end of the '60s, though, popular interest in the traditional musical started to wane, largely because of a new popular trend in music: Rock 'n Roll. Elvis made inroads into the teen-age audience with his extensive list of films, but never came close to the influence perpetrated by The Beatles with their semi-documentary A Hard Day's Night. The musical was invariably changed, and became a rallying point for a new generation of movie-goers (and none more so than Pink Floyd The Wall).

Another extremely popular musical sub-category, and one that has never changed in it's approach or appeal, is the Walt Disney animated musical. Ever since 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney studios have created innumerable animated features that have touched children and adults alike.
