The Montreal International Film Festival 2002 Edition (The Montreal World Film Festival)

This was the 26th year of the Montreal International Film Festival (The Montreal World Film Festival). Held from August 22 to September 2, 2002, it once again presented a large selection of continental and world premieres from first-time and veteran directors from around the world, many of which will never be available to North American audiences after being shown here.

Apart from the usual film selections, including the features in Official Competition, and the categories of World Cinema, New Trends, and a bevy of Canadian productions, the 2002 Festival presented a series of films focusing on the evolving Japanese cinema.

See the 2002 World Film Festival Reviews page for reviews of the films that I had a chance to see during the festival.

The Montreal International Film Festival 2001 Edition (The Montreal World Film Festival)

Celebrating its 25th year, the Montreal International Film Festival (The Montreal World Film Festival) was held from August 23 to September 3, 2001. A large selection of premieres from acclaimed directors and first-timers from around the world, many of which will probably never be shown again in North America, were presented to an ever-increasing crowd of film-goers.

Apart from the usual film selections, including the features in Official Competition, and the categories of World Cinema, New Trends, and a bevy of Canadian productions, the 2001 Festival also showed a series of films focusing on the growing German cinema.

See the 2001 World Film Festival Reviews page for some of the films that I had a chance to see during the fest.

Fant-Asia 2001 Edition

The latest edition of Fant-Asia plays once again in Montreal at the Imperial theatre on Bleury Street, corner of St-Catherine from July 13 to July 31, 2001.

Once again, new Hong Kong film offerings are dwindling, but to make up for it we have seen a burst of South Korean films ready to take its place.  There is also a wide variety of Japanese films, as well as classic and brand-new horror films from Latin America, Europe and Asia, some of which are having their international premiere here.

The Montreal International Film Festival 2000 Edition (The Montreal World Film Festival)

Now in its 24th year, the Montreal International Film Festival (The Montreal World Film Festival) is being held from August 25 to September 4, 2000. Montreal ranks among the most prestigious festivals in the world, and over the years has become the largest publicly-attended film festival in North America. The festival is the best chance audiences have to see some movies from abroad that will never re-appear on our shores. Award-winning films from this year's Cannes, Sundance, and other international festivals will compete for audiences' attention with lesser known films from around the world. In all, 216 feature films from 55 countries. And all in only 11 days!

Apart from the usual film selections, including the features in Official Competition, and the categories of World Cinema, New Trends, and a bevy of Canadian productions, the 2000 Festival also showed a series of films focusing on Iranian, Italian, and Latin American Cinema.

See the World 2000 Film Festival Recommended Films list for some ideas as to what's worth catching at the festival, and which films are getting the most attention, then take a look at the 2000 World Film Festival Reviews page.

Fant-Asia 2000 Edition

The latest edition of Fant-Asia (its 5th) is now playing in Montreal at the Imperial theatre on Bleury Street, corner of St-Catherine from July 13 to July 31, 2000.

This year sees much less retrospective films (Godzilla films are the exception), less Hong Kong films, and more Japanese films and recent outings, most of them quite recent (1999 - 2000 productions) including many that are having their North American premiere at the festival.

This year's selection was not as extensive as in other years, but it seemed an excellent choice. Check the New Media Recommended Film List for what was worth checking out, and the New Media Festival Reviews page for some reviews.
