Hong Kong films are something special. Here, too, there is a huge variety of genres, with one significant point in common to all of them: they are created to be, above all, ENTERTAINING. There are no deep revelations to be had in these films, but be it a comedy, an action/adventure film, or a drama, you know it will be different from just about anything you've seen before.

Recently, Hong Kong films have started to make an appearance in mainstream America with the advent of John Woo to Hollywood (most notably with Face/Off), Jackie Chan, and Jet Li. Mind you, there has ALWAYS been an underground interest in HK films. My own interest started quite late, after seeing the marvelous film A Chinese Ghost Story at the Montreal International Film Festival in 1989. It wasn't until a Korean friend showed me his (non-) subtitled tapes in 1993 that I realized how extraordinary HK films really were.

Now that HK films are more prevalent, thanks to the North American breakthroughs of stars such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Chow Tun Fat and Michelle Yeoh, as well as directors such as John Woo, audiences on this side of the ocean are catching up on decades of great films on video. Festivals, such as the Montreal-based Fant-Asia, also help promote HK films to a wider audience, and allow fans to have their only chance at enjoying these movies on the big screen.
