Horror films, I believe, are a very misunderstood genre. Up until the mid-70's, horror films presented a story that would terrify, horrify, and downright scare the pants off its audience. Some great old films include the B&W "monster" series of the 30's and 40's (including The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, and Dracula, among others), as well as some later ones from the 60's and 70's (The Exorcist comes foremost to mind). Unfortunately, when people talk about horror films these days, it seems they can only remember the "serial-killer" and/or gory films that have come out in the last two decades. The unfortunate prototype for these (usually) teen-targeted films was Halloween (1978), which was a good film unto itself. Its success led to other productions imitating the formula, and infusing them with only the blood and teenage angst and none of the originality (Friday the 13th series, Nightmare on Elm Street series, I Know What You Did Last Summer, etc.). To be fair, the '50s also had its share of teen-oriented horror flops (such as I Was a Teenage Werewolf, and company), having been created at the time for the drive-in crowd.

Compiling the Top 20 Horror Films, I was actually surprised to come up with more than 30 films that I deemed worthy. David Cronenberg appears three times on this list, as does John Carpenter (though Carpenter's original Halloween didn't quite make it).
